Italy's north is responsible for the country's most elegant white wines. The wines with "cool" aromas from South Tyrol and the Trentino show great class, the more fruity varieties from Friuli and Veneto also have fans worldwide. In Central Italy (Tuscany & Umbria), the varieties grown in barrique are often the most demanding ones. At higher altitudes in southern Italy, exciting and lively white wines can still be produced, which often shine with a very reasonable price / pleasure ratio .
In addition to the ubiquitous international vines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, Italy has a large number of local grapes, which produce characteristic wines. Try Arneis or Cortese from Piedmont, Ribolla Gialla or Friulano from Friuli. It is also worth to look for vines like Verdicchio, Verduzzo, Inzolia or Malvasia.
