Syrah or Shiraz is a noble vine, which originates in the French northern Rhône Valley. It was created by crossing the old varieties Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. The Syrah tends to small yields and is regarded as cultivable difficult variety. Nevertheless, it is popular worldwide due to its outstanding quality and unmistakable character. With some 188,000 hectares it is the sixth most cultivated variety in the world.
In the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône it shows its greatest elegance and produces world-famous wines such as the Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie or the Cornas, but also in the southern warmth the Syrah grows very well, like wines from the Languedoc, Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal and especially in Australia show. The famous Penfolds Grange and other world class wines are made from Syrah.
