Friuli with its capital Trieste, is located in the north-east of Italy. Viticulture in Friuli has a tradition of more than 3,000 years. The white wines of the region enjoy an excellent reputation for supple white wines, which are among the best throughout Italy. This is why Friuli was one of the first in the 1960s to get the newly created DOC status. The most famous sub-zones are Collio, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Isonzo and Carso. The Friuli has a wide range of grape varieties, besides the local Friulano, the Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have the best reputation for high-quality white wines.
