In Catalonia, the typical grapes of the Mediterranean region such as Grenache / Garnacha or Carinena / Carignan traditionally play the main role. The red wine cuvées are usually supplemented by the Syrah, which also thrives in this hot region.
The most famous denomination of origin is Priorat or Priorato, to which the DOCa certification was awarded, as otherwise in Spain only the Rioja. In addition, there are many wines from Montsant or Terra Alta, which have a similar character and have an excellent price-enjoyment ratio.
