Muskateller/Muscat/Moscato

"The Muscat" does not really exist. There are various independent varieties, which are summarized under the heading "Muscat". All in common is a unique and intensely fragrant aroma. The Muskateller grape belongs to the oldest cultivated grapes of mankind, presumably it originates from Anatolia.

Today the Gelber Muskateller yellow Muscat is popular. As a dry, light and fresh fragrant white wine, its renaissance started in Styria / Austria. This type is now also becoming more popular in German cultivation areas, where Muskateller is still very often produced as a sweet wine. In southern European regions, you can find the heavy and sweet dessert wines such as the Moscatel de Setubal (Portugal) or as a component in the Hungarian Tokaj. In Piedmont the specialty is Moscato d'Asti, a delightfully refreshing sweet DOCG sparkling wine with only 5.5% alcohol. Another variant is the "Red Muscat", which is a mutation of the Yellow Muscat with slightly reddish berries. From the South Tyrolean Rosenmuskateller (Moscato rosa) a red sweet wine specialty is produced, that has a very intensely fragance reminding of roses.
