In addition to the large industrial wineries of the Veneto, there are also, for culinary luck, the small family businesses with excellent and individual qualities, like Paolo Fornaser with his Monte Faustino winery, northeast of Verona. The Monte Faustino house vineyard, on a hillside at an altitude of 250m, has been managed by the Fornaser family since the 1920s. It is the heart of the winery. There is also the terraced location Traversagna and recently a vineyard in Sant'Ambrogio, the Costalunga. At Monte Faustino only hillside vineyards are cultivated, the Amarone cultivation in inferior flat areas, as unfortunately common today in many places, is out of the question for Paolo Fornaser. This creates wines that are really full of character, without the hidden sweetness of the mass productions in the Valpolicella area, authentic wines in an artisanal and traditional way. In the premium Amarone segment, the Monte Faustino wines are among the bargains.
