Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste - Pauillac

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is today one of the best wines in Pauillac and therefore in all of Bordeaux. The prices achieved on the market are significantly higher than those of a 5th Cru Classé, currently this château would probably be classified as a 2nd Cru.

Grand-Puy-Lacoste has consistently produced top wines since it was taken over by the Borie family in 1978. Some vintages such as 1986 and 1990 now have cult status among connoisseurs. The Grand-Puy-Lacoste is often on par with its Borie stablemate Chateau Drucu-Beaucaillou, which is often referred to as a "supersecond", which describes a 2nd cru that moves qualitatively towards a 1er cru.

The origins of this winery date back to the 16th century. The name Grand-Puy comes from the hill on which the vines grow, an excellent terroir that would have deserved a higher classification than "just" 5th Cru Classé as early as 1855. Incidentally, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has not changed its vineyard area since 1855. Many other Cru Classé bought plots from neighboring Cru Bourgeois and then marketed their production under their name and at much higher prices.

Owner François-Xavier Borie describes his château as follows: "Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a classic Pauillac, that is to say, characterized by class, allure, harmony. We are fortunate to have one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac and our wines display what may be called a French taste: aromatic, with body and a great sense of balance."
