Speri Viticoltori only bottles an Amarone whose grapes come from the Sant’Urbano estate. The grape varieties for this classic and very high quality Amarone are 70% Corvina Veronese and Corvinone, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara.
After manual and selective harvesting, the grapes are dried in a traditional manner in special drying warehouses with good ventilation without causing any rot. The process takes around 100 days and the berries lose around 40% of their water, resulting in a highly concentrated must. After fermentation, the Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Sant’Urbano spends 24 months in 500L French oak tonneaux, followed by a further 18 months in larger Slavonian oak barrels. A long and expensive process that leads to this showpiece of wine.
The Speri Sant’Urbano Amarone 2019 has an intense garnet red color. Its scent is room-filling and has notes of dried fruits, which is obvious, but it is also incredibly subtle, ethereal, chocolaty, with a fine herbal note. Very playful. The palate is impressive with its full-bodied, warm and impressively dense nature. Despite all its density, it is still drinkable, which is not least due to its pleasantly low residual sugar content, which distinguishes this classy Armarone from many banal colleagues. This wine doesn't need the sticky sweetness of many cheap amarons, it has so much density and bite and stays wonderfully long and lively on the palate. It is rare to find an Amarone with such elegance.
You can drink this monument young, but it will also develop positively in the bottle over decades.
