The Grand Cru Lage Sommerberg is located in Niedermorswhir, near Colmar in Alsace. Here too, Julien Schaal has a steep Riesling plot planted with old vines that are on average around 45 years old. The soil here is granite, which gives this Riesling its own character.
The Sommerberg is a historic wine region whose high quality was allegedly mentioned as early as 1214. Julien Schaals Riesling vines are located on the steepest part of this site.
The ripe and warm 2022 vintage produced a voluminous Riesling Sommerberg, which is endowed with aromas such as lime, peach and a delicate herbal note. On the palate it is powerful and intense, with a ripe acidity that marbles this wine beautifully and gives it its backbone in the long and playful finish. You can drink this wine young, but it also develops positively in the bottle for several years.
As this Riesling Grand Cru from Julien Schaal is quite dry by Alsatian standards, it goes well not only with the regional cuisine of the region, but also with more subtle dishes such as fish in white wine sauce, scallops or shellfish.
