The Alsace Grand Cru Rosacker is located almost 20 kilometers north of the city of Colmar and is considered one of the very best crus in Alsace. On the marly limestone soils of the Rosacker, Riesling dominates, making up two thirds of the vineyard area here. This vineyard, which slopes towards the east, has a long tradition; it was mentioned as early as 1483. It gets its name from the wild roses that grow here on the edge of the vineyard.
Julien Schaal works a plot of land here with vines that are around 40 years old. A very well-known image of Rosacker is the church that towers over the vineyard. The Rosacker Rieslings not only impress with their intensity and fullness, they can also be stored for a very long time; according to Julien Schaal, 20 years are no problem.
The Rosacker Riesling Grand Cru 2022 by Julien Schaal has a bouquet reminiscent of apricots, tangerines, limes, laurel and pears, has a playful taste, but is beautifully firm and mineral, with ripe acidity The wine has a wonderful structure, elasticity and enchanting freshness, despite all its density. You should store it!
The Wine Enthusiast rates the 2019 Rosacker vintage 95/100 and writes: "The subtle nose of this wine reveals precise, highlighted lemon peel. This brightness fills the streamlined palate with ripe peach, but everything happens along this central freshness, but still completely ripe and energetic. The dry, racy finish has a hint of mandarin." Unfortunately, no more recent vintages have been tasted yet.
