Probably the best Riesling vineyard in the Southern Palatinate from one of the very best wineries in Germany. The Kastanienbusch is the highest located Grosses Gewächs vineyard in the Palatinate. It lies in a natural valley that protects from the cold.
The 2018 Riesling Kastanienbusch GG from Oekonomierat Rebholz is an extract-rich and juicy wine, which is due on the one hand to the ripe vintage and on the other hand to the location, which generally results in more voluminous wines than the other GGs from the winery.
Wine Enthusiast gives this wine a 96/100. Quote: "A rare expression of red-slate soils from the Palatinate, this dry, richly textured Riesling balances piercing gooseberry and grapefruit flavors against a rambling backdrop of scorched earth and spice. Zesty and penetrating, it's a stately wine that deserves a few more years of cellaring to show its full color. At peak from 2023–2040 but likely to hold longer as well."
