Château du Retout from the Haut-Médoc has been an incredibly good red Bordeaux for under twenty euros for a 0.75L bottle for many years. The winery is located in Lamarque, not too far from the AOP Margaux. Therefore, the du Retout also has a character that is somewhat reminiscent of the famous neighboring appellation. Owner Frédéric Soual has a knack for winemaking, Retout never disappoints. No wonder, since he learned his trade at Chateau Palmer.
The Château du Retout 2018 vintage recently received a special award. The Cru Bourgeois tasting of the opulent and fully ripe 2018 vintage organized by Decanter magazine was won by Retout with an incredible 95/100 points ahead of the assembled competition. The jury, made up of the experienced tasters of this journal, particularly emphasized the expressive aroma of ripe cherries, cedar wood, cassis and plum. A hint of violet is also mentioned. One taster even wrote of a liqueur made from cherries and blackcurrants, which describes the intensity of the 2018 vintage well.
The du Retout 2018 consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28.5% Merlot and 11.5% Petit Verdot 11.5%. It matured in barriques for a little over a year, 30% of which were new.
