The Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Château de Beaucastel is a classic among the wines of the Rhône, famous for its phenomenal quality and its great aging potential. What is special about Beaucastel is its 70-hectare vineyard in one piece. In addition, it is one of the few wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has all thirteen permitted grape varieties in cultivation and usually also uses them in the final wines.
A large proportion of the red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made up of the Mourvedre grape variety, a powerful variety that produces dark wines with distinctive tannins. This usually makes the Beaucastel pithy than its neighbors, who rely more on the gentle Grenache Noir. The wines at Chateau de Beaucastel are aged in large Fuder barrels, barriques are not used. The wines have been certified organic since the 2020 vintage.
The 2020 vintage is another big one, stylistically it is more like the soft and juicy 2018 than the robust and decidedly powerful 2019. In terms of quality, all three don't take much. Such a series of large vintages is also rare in the climatically more balanced southern Rhône. The 2020 Château de Beaucastel has an impressive fruit intensity, is very clear and precise and always well balanced despite its concentration.
Top ratings are again hailing from the press: Decanter rates it 96/100 and praises the fresh and clear nose and the fine tannins. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate is there with 95-97/100 and describes the Beaucastel 2020 as expansive, richly structured, silky and long-ending.
