This sublime Barolo comes from the family's own Cascina Ornato vineyard in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, which produces some of Piedmont's best and longest-lived Nebbiolo wines. The majority of the harvest is aged in traditional large wooden vats, a small proportion of French barriques are also used. The Ornato was Pio Cesare's first single-vineyard Barolo; it is produced since the 1985 vintage. The quantities produced each vintage are very limited.
James Suckling gives Pio Cesare's 2018 Barolo Ornato an incredible 96/100 points and emphasizes the complex scent of ripe red berries, orange peel, nuts and spices. On the palate he describes it as full, compact and intense, but also graceful, thanks to the remarkably noble tannins. The drinking recommendation is from 2025.
