The Benedictine monastery Muri-Gries runs its own winery, which is one of the best in South Tyrol. 35 hectares of vines, 85% of which are planted with red varieties, are cultivated around Bolzano and on a high plateau in Eppan. Special attention is paid to the local red Lagrein grape, which produces the best results in this area and is therefore the figurehead of the abbey, whereby Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio and Vernatsch are excellent, too. The Lagrein Abbey Riserva was one of the first barrique wines made from this variety, which showed the potential of this grape in top vinyards. This wine has almost every year its three biccheri (the highest rating) in the Gambero Rosso wine guide.
