The white Rioja Vinedo Singular from Finca de Emperatriz comes from fifty to sixty-five year old Viura vines, planted at almost 600 meters above sea level in an ideal location with sandy marl soil grow, which is interspersed with large white stones that retain heat and provide good drainage.
The already low yields of these old vines were further reduced by spring frost in 2017. All of this resulted in a very concentrated and complex wine, whose power and depth are remarkable.
The Rioja Blanco Vinedo Singular 2017 was left on the mash for six hours after being selected at the sorting table to extract a certain degree of tannins that give the wine additional structure. Half of the wine was then fermented in concrete tanks, the other half in barriques. The expansion then also took place in these containers, with one third of the wooden barrels being new, one third used and one third used twice. The total production of this delicacy was around 17,000 bottles.
The white Finca Emperatriz Vinedos Singular is made to mature. Its depth and substance are already evident in the scent, the aromas are reminiscent of grapefruit, ripe pear and, of course, the vanilla note of the barrique aging. Despite its density, it is almost Burgundian on the palate, maybe a little creamier, but very clear and mineral, also spicy and, above all, very long in the finish. An exciting and high-class white wine that can stay in the cellar for a few more years, but doesn't have to.
