2021 was also a qualitatively exquisite year for the red wines in Austria, with deep and structured wines that combine depth and lively freshness.
The Ruby Carnuntum by Gerhard Markowitsch is a prime example of these attributes. The wine consists 100% of the very own Austrian red wine vine Zweigelt, which was cultivated in vineyards in Göttlesbrunn and Höflein on loess/clay soils. The hand-picked grapes were fermented in steel tanks and then matured to the best maturity in used barriques and large wooden barrels.
The winery calls this wine a crowd pleaser, a term that fits 100%. The stimulating scent of cherries, typical of Zweigelt, makes the scent of this wine likeable the first time you sniff it. The taste is soft and full at the same time, the long attack is fresh and has a fine chocolate note. Encourages refilling.
The Rubin Carnuntum goes well with game and poultry, pasta, pizza and a high-quality burger are also ideal partners.
The magazine Falstaff rates the 2020 vintage 91/100 and writes: "Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate lightening of the edges. Delicately spicy underlying ripe black berries, Dark cherries, fine herbal touch. Juicy, elegant, freshly structured, sweet cherries on the finish, mineral-salty finish."
