The Appassimento wave is now spreading beyond the Italian border. In Spain and France, this lush and semi-dry wine style is gaining more and more fans. The Domaine La Grange from the Languedoc has bottled its first such wine with the 2022 vintage and aptly calls it Rondeur, which means roundness.
The La Grange Rondeur is made from grapes that have dried on the vine. This results in a very concentrated must with such a high fructose content that the yeasts no longer convert some of the sugar into alcohol and it remains in the wine. For this charming red wine, La Grange uses the typical Languedoc grape varieties such as Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvedre, some of which are aged in barriques.
The Rondeur smells of dark fruits such as cassis, has a delicate raisin note, plus notes of Mediterranean herbs and a delicate woody note from barrique aging. On the palate it has a lot of volume and a delicate residual sweetness, which makes the wine very smooth. The fans of Primitivo & Co. will have great fun with the Rondeur.
