2021 is the second vintage of the Riesling Grosses Gewächs Schäwer from Ökonomierat Rebholz. Schäwer means slate in the Palatinate dialect, which refers to the type of soil that is rare on the southern wine route. It is probably the only top location of its kind in the region.
The Rebholz family's plot in Burrweiler Schäwer is planted with around 30-year-old Riesling vines. The winemaking is typical for the winery, clear, mineral and designed for long ageing in the bottle.
2021 was a very good vintage for Riesling. The relative coolness still gave this variety sufficient ripeness and promoted clarity and minerality. The 2021 Rieslings are likely to be superior to their predecessor and successor in the long term.
