Bodegas y Vinedos Ponce is the work of Juan Antonio, who learned his craft from none other than Temo Rodriguez, the star among Spain's oenologists. Juan Antonio returned to his parents' winery in 2005, which supplied grapes to the cooperative, and started brand new with the self-marketing of the wines.
The D.O. Manchuela is located in the east-central part of Spain, in the region of Castile-La Mancha. With innovative methods, biodynamic farming and old ungrafted vines at an altitude of 900 meters, Juan Antonio succeeds in creating true marvels of Spanish wine culture. His motto is freshness, drinking flow and as little alcohol as possible. How he manages that in this hot region is fascinating.
P.F stands for Pie Franco and refers to ungrafted, i.e. ungrafted European vines that have successfully defied phylloxera. The vines of the Bobal grape variety for the Ponce P.F come from a small vineyard and are a whopping 90 years old. An important factor for the class of this wine. The entire grapes, i.e. with styles, are fermented in small wooden barrels and, of course, only with the naturally occurring yeasts. The character of origin is the ultimate goal. The Ponce P.F is then stored in these casks for 12 months until it is ready for bottling.
The result is a complex and dynamic wine that appears incredibly lively despite all its strength. The oak is perfectly matching to the dark fruit notes such as blackberries, plums and black cherries, and there is also a fine herbal note (thyme). A subtle wine full of excitement and with great class! Where else in the world can you find a 95+/100 Parker wine for around €15? (2020 vintage - 2021 not yet rated, as of 8/2023)
