2016 was a vintage of the highest quality in Champagne and with a very satisfactory harvest. A picture-perfect year for vintage champagne.
The 2016 Pol Roger Vintage brut is composed of the house's traditional blend of varieties, 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The grapes come from 20 different 1er Cru and Grand Cru Champagne locations in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs subzones. It is only produced in very good years, most recently 2015, 2013, 2012, 2009 and 2008.
The individual wines are fermented cool in steel tanks and only combined into the final cuvée after malolactic fermentation. This is followed by bottle fermentation in Pol Roger's cool cellar at a low 9° Celsius. Shaking here is still done exclusively by hand. A complex and costly process.
The Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2016 has a delicate golden yellow color. The scent contains a fine note of yeast (brioche), nuts, honey and apples, and is also slightly reminiscent of rose petals. On the palate it is powerful and full-bodied, the fullness of the ripe vintage is noticeable, but the freshness and elegance are not neglected either. The nutty brioche note of the fragrance can be found in the long finale. It will mature positively in the bottle for a few years.
