In Pernand-Vergelesses there is still something called inexpensive Burgundy. This community north of Aloxe-Corton has excellent terroirs and usually produces more elegant red Burgundies than, for example, its neighbors Ladoix or Chorey-les-Beaune, which are at a similar price level.
Chapuis & Chapuismake a beautiful example of a red Pernand-Vergelesses, which is also sold at a fair price. The Pinot Noir vines for this wine are around 40 years old. After fermentation, this wine spends twelve months in used barriques - or actually pièces, as the small 228L barrels are called in Burgundy.
The scent of the 2020 Pernand Vergelesses from Chapuis & Chapuis is reminiscent of red and dark berries, cherries, a hint of licorice and spices. This ripe yet fresh vintage ensures a perfect balance with fine tannins on the palate, the wine has a good pressure on the palate and is long and already in the best balance. Of course, additional years of storage are no problem at all.
Food recommendation: A universal accompaniment to food, ideal of course with a Coq au Vin or with game, with medium-firm cheeses, goose and duck, also with a fruity sauce.
