Penfolds serves the proverbial, intense and powerful Australian Shiraz type, as it is valued by many. This wine originally bore the name of the single vineyard Kalimna on the label, from which parts of this wine still come today, but there are also other vineyards from the Barossa Valley in South Australia that make the same type of wine.
This wine does not want to be fine. The BIN 28 is a wine for the belly and the heart. You just have to like him in his direct and characteristic Aussie style. Aromatically it is reminiscent of liquid chocolate cake, cinnamon, coconut and ripe dark berries, also of cassis. Yes, the whole thing even has something of a Bounty candy bar. On the palate it is velvety, opulent, juicy and quite loud, which is partly due to the American oak barrels in which it is stored for 12 months, but everything fits. Australian Shiraz in its most original form, made by a master.
The ratings for the first-class 2020 vintage of the Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz are accordingly brilliant. Andrew Caillard (Master of Wine) is at 95/100, Parker's Wine Advocate just behind with 94+/100, plus there are various ratings of 93 and 94/100 from other media.
