In the portfolio of the famous Australian wine producer Penfolds there are two similarly priced Shiraz wines that differ in style. The Coonawarra Shiraz BIN 128 is the "Cool Climate Shiraz" of the two. It is less lush and has more elegant tannins than its "warmer" counterpart BIN 28.
The BIN 128 comes from grapes grown on the Terra Rossa soils of Coonawarra, which give the wine a beautiful clarity with high density and concentration. The expansion takes place in wooden barrels made of French oak, 20% of which are new, as well as from second and third use.
Aromatically, the Penfolds BIN 128 Shiraz is reminiscent of pepper, cranberries and blackberries, and has a subtle herbal spiciness reminiscent of thyme and sage. On the palate it has power and tension, is very vital thanks to its fine tannins and always makes you want to take the next sip. David Sly of Decanter magazine gives the 2020 BIN 128 a fantastic 95/100 and is impressed by the muscular and lively nature of this Conawarra Shiraz. Jeni Hafen from Winepilot is also at 95/100.
For the European market there is the Penfolds BIN 128 with natural cork. In Australia the entire collection is only available with a screw cap.
