In contrast to the Grand Vin from Château Lafon-Rochet, the second wine Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet contains more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon. This makes sense because the plots for this wine are on gravelly clay soil and Merlot likes the clay. In addition, the Merlot content makes it earlier accessible and generally more charming.
The vines for this rarely seen second wine are around 30 years old and the harvest is harvested by hand. This wine was harvested from September 25, 2019 to October 11. Fermentation took place in steel tanks and cement vats, after which the Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet 2019 was stored in barriques for twelve months.
The excellent 2019 vintage offers fullness and structure, but is always gentle for a Saint-Estephe. The proverbial austerity of the wines of this municipality in the Médoc does not exist here. The dark fruit notes are perfectly balanced by the delicately spicy barrique aromas. An incredibly delicate Saint-Estèphe that is great fun early on, but can also be stored for several years. Lots of Bordeaux at a reasonable rate.
