The Ornellaia was one of the first so-called Supertuscans, made from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grape varieties new to Tuscany in the Bolgheri region. Its premiere vintage was 1985. Today it is considered one of the sought-after classics of this wine category and has a fan base across the globe.
The 2021 vintage in Bolgheri is considered one of the very best of all time. The press is overflowing with praise for the Ornellaia 2021. Here are just a few examples: 99/100 from Vinous.com and Jamessuckling.com; 98/100 wine whitener; 97/100 decanter. The 96/100 from Parker’s Wine Advocate seems almost stingy.
The Ornellaia 2021 consists of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. Even the selection of the berries is merciless. Selection is carried out on double sorting tables before and after destemming. There is also an optical sorting machine that removes all sub-optimal berries so that only the best material is used for the Ornellaia. Each plot and grape variety is vinified and developed separately before the lot is checked for suitability for Ornellaia and added to the final cuvée.
The expansion takes 18 months and takes place in 70% new and 30% second-used barriques. After bottling, the wine is allowed to rest in the bottle for another twelve months before it is delivered to the eagerly waiting customers.
