The MR de Compostella is the joint work of the two winemakers and friends Mzokhona Mvemve & Bruwer Raats, who wanted and have created a spectacular world-class wine from South Africa with this Bordeaux-style red wine cuvée.
The "Mvemveraats" consists of the best plots of the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and of course the beloved Cabernet Franc, which is the specialty of Bruwer Raats. A character wine should be created here, which can be stylistically different every year, but always has a premium quality. Each of the selected parcels is vinified separately and then blindly tested by the two oenologists to see whether the quality is sufficient for the MR de Compostella.
The best batch, regardless of which grape variety it is in the vintage in question, then becomes the leading variety in the cuvée. The other varieties are subordinate and complement the winner. Ultimately a very complex process, for which the result makes up for it. So far there have been 11 vintages of this wine, all of which have their own style and all belong to the absolute top in South Africa.
The 2017 vintage of MR de Compostella consists of 43% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 10% Malbec. Master of Wine Greg Sherwood had the opportunity to taste all vintages from 2004 to 2017 and gave the 2017 the highest rating with an amazing98/100. What is striking is the great ageing potential of this red wine, even the first wine from 2004 was expected to be able to age for another 20+ years.
