The Estate line from Mount Riley is characterized by a lot of enjoyment at a fair price. Of course, this also applies to the red Pinot Noir, the Burgundy vine feels very comfortable in the rather cool climate in Marlborough. At Mount Riley, Mas relies on different Pinot clones in three different locations in order to produce a wine that is as playful and complex as possible. The grapes undergo cold maceration to intensify the fruit and, after fermentation, are aged in French barriques for seven months.
Due to the cold maceration, this Pinot Noir has a rather dark color with ruby red reflections, for this variety that is otherwise not too intensely colored. The scent is reminiscent of plums and black cherries, also dried herbs and some vanilla. As befits a Pinot Noir, the Mount Riley is very supple on the palate, the tannins are silky soft and support the long-lasting finish.
This wine was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2021 Royal Easter Show.
Mushroom dishes, game, firmer cheeses or pasta come to mind as good combinations with this wine.
