Merlot has felt particularly at home on Lake Garda for over 100 years. This once immigrated vine has long since made its home here, which is why it was also granted access to the DOP/DOC Garda.
The Zenato Merlot Garda DOC grows at the southern end of the lake, in south-facing vineyards with clay and sandy soils. After the manual harvest, the grapes are selected again. Only the best raw material may be used for this wine. After the traditional fermentation in the tank, the Garda Merlot from Zenato is stored partly in French barriques and partly in large wooden barrels made of Slavonian oak. After bottling, it remains in the winery until it is treated as ready to drink.
As befits a Merlot, this wine is characterized by its softness, full flavor and smooth tannins. The aromas are reminiscent of plums and cassis, plus a delicate vanilla note from the barrique aging. Everything is perfectly balanced. This delicious Zenato wine was awarded a gold medal at the Berlin Wine Trophy (2018 vintage).
Zenato himself described this Merlot as a "great and aristocratic red wine for aging, the result of a very marked and traditional vinification with Merlot grapes from the Lake Garda region."
