The Raats Familiy Jasper is a cuvée of various high-quality red grape varieties that originate in the southwest of France. A Bordeaux plus cuvée, if you will. The main roles are played by Cabernet Franc and Malbec, plus small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, all grown in Stellenbosch / South Africa.
The scent of Jasper von Raats is intense and makes you think of ripe blackberries, black cherries and cocoa. There is also a hint of anise and tobacco. On the palate, the fruit is permeated by ripe tannins, the wine is aromatically complex and, despite its density, always fresh. Best balance at a high level.
Andy Howard is Master of Wine and writes for Decanter magazine about the 2017 Jasper: "A different take on the Bordeaux blend, with a high percentage of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, this is complex and intriguing. Great purity of fruit, combined with freshness, leafy characters and some fine tannins. Good acidity to finish. Elegant and refined – a very good Stellenbosch blend." This excellent cuvée is worth 93/100 to him.
