The Supertuscan Ilatraia from Brancaia is a premium wine from the Widmer family's Maremma winery. It can also be seen as a counterpart to Brancaia Il Blu, which comes from the vineyards of Chianti Classico.
Very typical of the Maremma, the Brancaia Ilatraia consists of Bordeaux grape varieties, with a high proportion of Petit Verdot, a variety that otherwise plays a minor role. This is accompanied by 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. The aging process, which lasts eighteen months, takes place in small French oak barrels, half of which are renewed each year. The Ilatraia first came onto the market with the 2002 vintage. The winery describes it as: “Power meets finesse.”
2020 was once again an excellent vintage in the Maremma, rated 94/100 by Wine Spectator magazine.
