Even with the entry-level Pinot Noir wine from the Deutzerhof, there is really good red wine, which of course is particularly true in a fantastic red wine vintage like 2019. This wine has an independent character, which is shaped by its northern origin, the aging in traditional wooden barrels and the classic slate soil of the Ahr valley. The result is an unmistakable red wine that defies international Pinot Noir comparisons.

The grapes for this enchanting red grow in the basin of the village of Mayschoß, where the Pinot Noirs find the warm place they need to ripen perfectly in this rather cool growing area. According to the philosophy of the Association of German Quality Wine Estates (VDP), it is the "estate wine" of the Deutzerhof.

Moving in large old wooden barrels, which impart little or no taste to the wine, is very traditional, in order to achieve the traditional Ahr taste profile that has been common here for centuries. Fruit, intensity and mineral elegance characterize this wine. The fruit is relatively dark for a German Pinot Noir, and there is an attractive herbal spice that gives the wine a lot of play. Its delicacy due to the elegant tannins nestles up with many dishes, it supports but never dominates.

This is Ahr Pinot Noir full of character at a very reasonable price.
