The Cru AOC Cornas, which is small in terms of area, has the potential to produce great wines. The steep, terraced sites of this AOC near the city of Valence are an ideal terroir for the Syrah grape variety, which produces the probably most elegant and high-quality wines of this vine on the northern Rhône.
The Cornas from Maison les Alexandrins grows at an altitude of over 250 m on terraces with soils containing granite. The grapes come mainly from the single vineyard Les Eygats. This noble red wine is aged for fifteen months in wooden barrels that have been used once or twice.
2020 was a warm year, but it had the advantage of relatively cool nights during the vegetation period, which finally gave the wines a wonderful clarity and freshness with a high level of maturity and concentration. The high alcohol levels of the two predecessors could also be avoided. So 2020 is a very fine year that has a more classic style and yielded wines with a long shelf life.
The Alexandrins Cornas is a dark berry wine with elasticity and structure, it also has spicy aromas reminiscent of pepper, liquorice and floral notes. The precision of this vintage is impressive. Everything is in the right place here. This Cornas will provide years to decades of great fun.
