Château Mont-Redon is one of the best-known wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône Valley. The cultivation area is north of the city of Avignon. This used to be the summer residence of the Popes of Avignon, which is still evidenced by the ruins at the highest point of the AOP.

Mont-Redon has an excellent terroir with the round pebbles that can be found in abundance in the ground. They store the sun's heat during the day, and there is also a layer of clay about 2 meters deep that stores the water in this very warm growing zone, which means that the old and deep-rooted vines can survive the summer heat well.

For theChateauneuf-du-Pape rouge, Mont-Redon uses a traditional mix of varieties, consisting of the grape varieties Grenache Noir, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, plus smaller parts Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, and Vaccarese. After fermentation, the wine is aged for eighteen months, half in 228L Burgundy barrels and half in large traditional wooden barrels.

The 2020 Mont-Redon Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge has a bright ruby red color. Its open bouquet is reminiscent of red and dark berries, Mediterranean herbs, cocoa and a subtle roasted aroma from the barriques. On the palate it is decidedly supple and opulent, a typical characteristic of the charming and early accessible 2020 vintage from the southern Rhône. Its very long finale is perfectly balanced.

As a food accompaniment, this red wine classic is particularly suitable for festive roasts and braised dishes, grilled meat, and if the wine has matured for a few years, also with game.

Additional note Frank Rembold: speaking of ripeness: Mont-Redon Chateauneufs ripen excellently. One of my most beautiful mature wines from the southern Rhône was the 1978 Mont-Redon, aged around 25 years.
