In the south of the municipality of Chassagne-Montrachet is the 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot. The site takes its name from an abbey dating back to 1150. Below the abbey, Benjamin Leroux has a half-hectare plot of land whose Chardonnay vines were planted in 1969. The great age of the vines is immediately noticeable in this dream wine. The dashing minerality at such a high concentration is stunning. The wine has an enormous amount of draft and depth, is enormously long on the palate, and the barrique (20% new oak) blends in perfectly. The wine was aged in 300L barrels for 18 months and was only fermented with natural yeasts.
The 2020 Abbaye de Morgeot by Leroux is so perfect and harmonious that you can drink it now. Of course, it will do well in the bottle for at least a decade, but it's incredibly hard to resist now. We can't remember a comparable vintage of this wine.
