The Blaufränkisch Edelgrund is the central structure between the Heideboden and the individual vineyards at Paul Achs. This is the name of a Riede (site) that lies between Gols and Podersdorf and is known for its soft and velvety red wines. The name derives from a nobleman who once owned the property.
In terms of quality, it is above the Heideboden Blaufränkisch and below the single vineyard Crus from Paul Achs. It is something like the winery's 1er Cru when it comes to Blaufränkisch. Here you get very typical and high-class Blaufränkisch with storage potential from one of the best winemakers in Burgenland. For less than 20 € the bottle it is a great value!
Paul Achs matures the Edelgrund for twelve months in used barriques, which gives it a fine but never dominant flavor. The Austrian wine magazine Falstaff rated it 91-93/100 and praised the lively style and the light-footed and well-integrated tannins. Parker's Wine Advocate is at 93-94 for the predecessor, 2022 is unfortunately not yet rated (as of July 2023).
