The 1er Cru vineyard Beaune Clos du Roi is located below Les Marconnets. Clos du Roi wines are said to have a rather fruity character with soft tannins. Clay-sandy limestone soil on a subsoil of round pebbles is common here. Chanson owns about 35% of this Cru and is therefore the most important winery in this climate. 2/3 of the Chanson area is planted with Pinot Noir. It takes its name from King Louis XI, who once owned this vineyard.

The excellent 2020 vintage goes down as the earliest Burgundy harvest in history to date. Despite the very warm year, the wines are surprisingly classically structured and do not really have any heat characteristics in the aromas and express the character of their terroir very well.

The Chanson Beaune Clos du Roi 2020 has a typical light ruby red burgundy color. The scent is reminiscent of ripe raspberries and a hint of mushrooms and forest soil, plus a fine wood tone that expands the aromatic spectrum and nestles beautifully with the fruit. Despite its youth, it is not repellent on the palate, has a very nice structure due to the ripe tannins and a great length in the harmonious aftertaste.

The very critical Jancis Robinson gives a praiseworthy 17/20 points, Vinous is at 91/100. Food recommendations: fruity duck breast dishes, wild fowl and the Burgundian cheeses Epoisses or Langres, an old Comté is also a good choice.
