The growing region of Banyuls, located in the French part of Catalonia, is one of the most beautiful wine-growing regions in the world. The vineyards sloping steeply towards the sea are a beautiful sight.
In addition, of course, there are the characterful wines of the region, a significant proportion of which are produced as Vin doux Naturel, i.e. sweet wines that, like port wine, are stopped during fermentation by adding alcohol. However, Banyuls has less alcohol than Port, mostly around 16% vol.
Rimage here refers to a vintage wine, Précoce a previously bottled wine that continues to develop in the bottle, in contrast to the examples that are sometimes stored decades before bottling . This is not a question of quality, but rather a question of style.
The Abbé-Rous Banyuls Rimage is a beautiful example of this wine style. It is made from 100% Grenache Noir vines, which have a tiny yield of around 22 hl/ha. The aging takes 7-8 months in large wooden barrels. Aromatically, it is reminiscent of raspberries and chocolate, which also indicates what you can serve this juicy red sweet wine with. Chocolate desserts or cakes, desserts with red berries, blue cheese also goes very well with them.
Master of Sommelier Andreas Larsson rates the 2017 Bayuls Rimage a very good 92/100 and writes: "Youthful dark purple hue. Pure, floral and sweet fruity nose offering black cherry, blackberry and cassis notes. Very nice density on the palate , ample and sweet palate with layers of ripe dark fruit, some pastry and spice notes with grainy tannin and a long succulent finish. Very nice drinkability."
