The 1er Cru location Clos de la Cave des Ducs is the highest vineyard in the municipality of Volnay, and it is also very small. It is wholly owned by Jean-Charles Carré, an associate of Benjamin Leroux. Since the entire harvest of this vineyard is bottled and marketed by Benjamin Leroux, the label bears the inscription "Monopole".
The Clos de la Cave des Ducs, in addition to its excellent orientation, benefits from the old vines, which have reached a remarkable average of around 50 years. In addition, the site is surrounded by houses on three sides, which retains heat and ensures better grape ripening.
This 1er Cru produces emphatically structured and elegant wines that are among the very best in Volnay. The draft of the Clos de la Cave de Ducs is actually worthy of Grand Cru. The proportion of new barriques is moderate at only around 20%, the cultivation takes place according to biodynamic methods, but without organic certification.
2021 is a subtle and rather cool vintage that produced Pinot Noirs with glorious precision, as demonstrated by this magnificent specimen. A sublime Volnay, classic, fine and able to age a long time.
