The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape of the Domaine du Vieux Lazaret consists of the classic vines of the southern Rhône Valley. Grenache Noir makes up the largest proportion, plus Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre. At Vieux Lazaret, all 13 approved Chateauneuf-du-Pape vines are in cultivation. This allows a high degree of flexibility for the ideal composition of the final cuvée. Traditionally, the wine is fermented and stored primarily in concrete tanks, with only around 15% coming from wooden barrels. For the perfect balance, grapes from different soils and locations in the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape area are used for this cuvée.
2022 is a very good vintage on the southern Rhône, resulting in a full-bodied and stunningly charming Chateauneuf-du-Pape with intense fruit, soft tannins with Mediterranean spice and lots of density and extract. It can be enjoyed soon after bottling, but it still lasts for several years in the bottle without any problems. The style of the 2022 Vieux Lazaret is very reminiscent of the enchanting 2020 vintage from the southern Rhône with its opulent fruit and soft tannins.
Particularly well-suited dishes include a Mont-Ventoux casserole, lamb and game dishes or mushroom risotto, and much more.
