2019 is considered an excellent red wine year in Burgenland, Oesterreichwein.at even speaks of a historic vintage.
The Merlot Reserve is a charmer. The wine is absolutely dry, but due to its opulent nature and round tannins it is a very smooth red, as is typical for this popular grape variety and is further supported by the Salzl family's wine style.
The 2019 Merlot Reserve from Weingut Salzl from Illmitz / Burgenland has a deep dark ruby red color and a violet shimmer on the edge. The scent is intense and subtle at the same time, the fruit notes such as plum and blueberry are complemented by a herbal note and some smoked bacon. Due to the twelve-month aging in 100% new barriques, there is a clear wood note, which does not affect the charm of this wine at all.
On the palate it is opulent and fruity, the velvety tannins give the whole thing a good structure, in the long and balanced finish you can find the plum note again, along with some cocoa, coffee and a note reminiscent of thyme. A Merlot straight out of a picture book!
It tastes excellent when young, but also ages very well for several years in the bottle.
