The Barbaresco location Costa Russi is below the Sori Tildin. It is 4.3 hectares in size and has a very high average age of the Nebbiolo vines of around 75 years. At Gaja it is considered the freshest and most floral of the three Barbaresco Crus. It may be that the other two vineyards are more spectacular when young, but a great Costa Russi vintage with the appropriate maturity will never disappoint.
Decanter magazine, for example, gave the 1990 Costa Russi 97/100 points at a tasting in 2018. It is not without reason that Gaja sells all three for the same price.
