The Vina Arana Gran Reserva was first produced by La Rioja Alta in the 2012 vintage and is primarily made from Tempranillo and some Graciano vines from its own vineyards, which were planted in 1973 on clay soils. The wine is matured very traditionally; the wine spends three years in used barriques that were produced in the winery's own cooperage.

2016 is the fourth vintage of this wine after 2012, 2014 and 2015 and again a hit with the Vina Ardana Gran Reserva. Aromatically, a classic Rioja with an emphasis on elegance and the typical aging aromas, red berries, plum jelly and caramel characterize its scent, vanilla and cocoa can also be found. A new era has dawned on the palate for a few years now at La Rioja Alta. Despite traditional aromas, the wine is much more opulent than before because the grapes were simply harvested at a riper age. The wine has a nice bite and ripe tannins, the finish is long and well balanced. The 2016 Vina Arana was awarded a whopping 96/100 by the Spanish wine guide Guia Penin.
