Werther Windisch - Rheinhessen

The Weingut Werther Windisch is one of the top newcomers in Rheinhessen. Jens Windisch took over his parents' winery in 2010 after completing his studies at the Geisenheim University of Viticulture and internships in various wineries. The 13 hectares of vineyards around Mommenheim, west of Nierstein, are mainly planted with white varieties, in addition to Riesling, Silvaner also plays a role here role, for the quality of which Jens Windisch is held in high esteem, also beyond the region. The wines are mostly fermented spontaneously, herbicides are not used in order to preserve nature's biodiversity.

The Werther Windisch wines are aromatically crystal clear, uncompromisingly dry and yet harmonious. Due to the mature acidity, there is no need for a concealing residual sweetness to give the wines the right balance. This is careful winemaking with the right instinct, the wines are also very stable and mature slowly. With his first Riesling, Jens Windisch was among the top 15 of 1300 Rieslings at the Riesling Champion Awards in 2012. Wein-plus.de head taster Marcus Hofschuster wrote in July 2022 about the 2015 Silvaner Lieth: "Oh, that's great. Firm, handy, precise, enormously mineral. Much fun". This comment also shows how great the Werther-Windisch wines can age. Even with Silvaner, a grape that is not necessarily the first to be mentioned when asked about long-lived wines. We are sure that we will hear and read a lot more about this estate in the future.
