One of the least known DOCs in Tuscany is certainly Montecucco. It lies between the Brunello di Montalcino and the DOCG Morellino di Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, which is part of the Maremma. As with its neighbours, the Sangiovese grape plays the most important role in Montecucco.
For four generations, the Pierini and Brugi families have been managing their estates, Podere Poggilombardo in Scansano and Podere Belvedere in Campagnatico. In addition to high-quality wines, olive oil, spelt, saffron, chilli and jam are also produced here.
The production volume is small, just four hectares are planted with vines. Samuele Pierini is responsible for the viticulture, and he is supported and advised by Nicola Scottini. The wines are perfectly prepared and can be bought for a fair price. Since the 2017 vintage, the wines have been certified organic (IT-BIO-004).
