Ornellaia - Toskana

Ornellaia is one of the really big names in Italian wine. Founded by Ludovico Antinori in 1981, this Maremma winery has risen like a comet. The 1985 premiere vintage of the red Ornallaia was one of Italy's cult wines practically from the start. That is still the case today. The 1998 Ornellaia was named the best red wine of the year in the world by Wine Spectator magazine.

Over time, the portfolio was supplemented by further labels, the Le Volte (started vintage 1991), Le Serre Nuove (1997) and the single-variety Merlot Masseto (since 1986, today a seperate winery) were added, and there have also been white wines for a few years, such as the white Ornellaia (since 2013), the Poggio alle Gazze and the Ornus.

In 2002, the Californian winery Mondavi acquired the Tenuta Ornellaia and sold 50% to the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi family, who in turn took over the 50% Mondavi shares in 2005 and thus became the sole owner. Thus arose the paradoxical situation that this estate, founded by an Antinori, came into the possession of the greatest Antinori competitor, Frecobaldis.

The Ornellaia terroirs near the town of Bolgheri, which have a particularly good climate for viticulture, benefit in summer from a light breeze from the sea, which cools the grapes and any moisture that is present dries quickly, which means that there is hardly any rot. The following grape varieties are cultivated: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, some Cabernet Franc, Petit Manseng and Sauvignon Blanc.

Ornellaia produces its wines sustainably, there are as few interventions in nature as possible and the greatest possible biodiversity in the vineyards is important.
