The history of Domaine E. Guigal is one of the most successful in winemaking of the 20th century. Etienne Guigal founded the company in 1946 as a small winery in Ampuis, a cozy village in the AOC Côte-Rôtie.
In 1961 his son Marcel joined him and in 1973 his wife Bernadette. In the early 1980s the Guigal family took over the wine trading house Vidal-Fleurie, where Etienne had once worked.
In 1995 the magnificent estate Château d‘Ampuis was added. In 2001, the Domaine Jean-Louis Grippat and de Vallouit joined Guigal, in 2006 the Domaine de Bonserine and in 2017 Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Guigal now has its own vineyards in the AOPs Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. There are also many other origins from which grapes are processed by contract winegrowers.
Today, Philippe Guigal, trained as an oenologist, runs the company with his wife Eve, which can almost be described as a wine empire. In addition to wines from its own vineyards, Guigal also offers a wide range of wines from the entire Rhône Valley, which are prepared with great care and skill.
In 2003, its own cooperage was opened, which produces around 800 barrels per year. Since then, Guigal wines have been aged in the company's own barrels.
At Maison Guigal, the vineyards are cultivated with care and under the premise of preserving the soil's ecosystem. Sustainability and winemaking practices in harmony with nature are standard.
The most famous wines are the rare three single vineyards from Côte-Rôtie, La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque. These top-quality wines have contributed significantly to the excellent reputation of the northern Rhône. They have been rated 100/100 by Robert Parker many times and are among the most sought-after wines in the world.
