The wine-growing region Penedes D.O. is located in Spanish Catalonia, south of the city of Barcelona, and north of the famous Priorat DO. In addition to the still wines, Penedes is famous above all for the Spanish sparkling wine Cava, which has its own D.O.
Penedes is the largest wine-growing region in Catalonia and is considered a pioneer of modern wine-growing in Spain, as French vines such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were planted here early on and developed in an international style. In addition, the local vines also play an important role. Tempranillo is called Ull de Llebre here, and other important red wine varieties are Mazuelo and Garnacha. The warmest zone is near the sea at an altitude of around 250 meters and is called Bajo-Penedès. Some of the best red wines in the region grow here.
In Penedes you can find excellent quality wines at mostly reasonable prices. There are many ambitious winemakers like the wine pioneer Miguel A. Torres and newcomers like Avgvstvs Forum who are causing a sensation in Spain with their organic wines.
