What Riesling is to Germany or Cabernet to Bordeaux, the Touriga Nacional grape variety is to Portugal. The racehorse or figurehead, even if others have more vineyards, the Touriga brings the quality. It grows from the Douro Valley in the north to the Alentejo in the south and can produce first-class wines anywhere.

At Ermelinda Freitas, this powerful grape variety is also made Reserva, which is kept in the juicy style typical of the winery. The grapes grow in the Palmela region, on the Setúbal Peninsula, which can be reached from Lisbon by crossing the famous Tagus Bridge to the south.

The Touriga Nacional Reserva by Ermelina Freitas matures in barriques, half made of French and half American oak. It has a dark violet color, which testifies to the high ripeness of the grapes. The scent is reminiscent of ripe dark berries, blueberry jam, vanilla and coconut, it is opulent and fruity on the palate, the tannins that are definitely present are only noticeable in the background. A typical powerful red wine from warm climes, lots of charm and an impressively full taste.

Serve it best with stews, beef, lamb and game, as well as with pizza or spicy cheeses.
