Ortsweine are among the modern German wine categories the secret stars for price-conscious connoisseurs. At the Weingut Thörle, the quality of this category is so high that these wines outperform some of the Grosses Gewachs wines from other producers. This quality is based on good vineyards and low yields, which are between 40 and 55 hl per hectare depending on the vintage and variety.

A specialty of the Thörle is definitely the garpe variety Silvaner. They start here with an Ortswein, there is no such thing as an estate wine (Gutswein) from this grape. The Silvaner vom Kalkstein already has so much power and grip that 50% of it is aged in 500l tonneaux, the other half is stored in traditional large oak barrels, which do not give the wine any appreciable taste. The result is a Silvaner with a certain Burgundy style, which has a light roasted note, the fruity notes are reminiscent of grapefruit, quince and pear. It is creamy on the palate, has elegant mineral notes, plenty of extract and a great length. The wine always remains fresh and drinkable. A modern and charming Silvaner style.

James Suckling gave the 2020 vintage a whopping 93/100 points and thinks that with a few years of maturity this Silvaner could probably be mistaken for a white Burgundy.
